final essay

'explain the importance of Cleopatra in ancient Egypt/world.

Cleopatra is one of the most famous queens of all in ancient Egypt as well as the last. Her story made her famous while her rule made Egypt quite powerful. She had a devotion to her country and was a born leader however, she was not born to lead. Cleopatra was the third child and only ascended to the throne when her other siblings were not able to through deaths or exile.
Cleopatra intertwined herself with the late republic Rome, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. It is seen in many sources including the movie 'Cleopatra' and through many sites and books that Cleopatra's relationship with the leaders of the republic was of crucial importance to the course of history in this period.

Cleopatra was born in 69BC of Alexandrian background, she knew she was destined to be queen and invisioned herself as Empress of the world. Cleopatra took the throne at 17 with the greatest intelligence and charisma that the world had ever seen and she blew away the whole ancient world.

The Romans at the time were fighting for power over one another. This war was between Julius Caesar and Pompey, after the battle they sailed to Alexandria to try to get Ptolemy on each's side. It was here that Pompey was killed by Ptolemy as he took Caesar's side. This time is important as this was when Cleopatra and Caesar first met. He was immediately bewitched by her and became her lover that very same night. Six months later the Alexandrian war ended and Cleopatra was restored to the throne. Not long after this, their first and only child, Caesarian was born. Caesar then returned to Rome and later he was joined by Cleopatra. Just after Cleaopatra joined Caesar he was assasinated. This time in history has been shown in many movies including the most famous movie - "Cleopatra" (1963), the story of her life with Caesar and later Mark Antony and where she is remembered for her rule and importance in the ancient world. Cleopatra had much say in the happenings of Rome in the few years she was with Caesar and was believed to be part of the reason he was murdered (he wanted to be king of Rome, change the laws and make Caesarian his legal heir by marrying Cleopatra even though he already had a wife). The events that had taken place at this time made Cleopatra very important and famous in the Ancient world.

Rome being in a state of turmoil after Caesar's assasination and armies fought for control- these armies were Octavian's and Mark Antony's. The next episode of Cleopatra's story was revealed in the relationship with Mark Antony. Cleopatra saw the chance to return power to Rome and Egypt and was able to do that with the help of Mark. By meeting Cleopatra Mark forgot about all his obligations and was dazzeled by her glamour and seductive nature. according to Plutarch - "the contract of her presence, if you live with her, was irrisistable; the attraction of her person and the character that attended all she said or did was something bewitching." from Plutarch's "Life of Mark Antony" Sometime after Mark Antony fathered twins with Cleopatra and he diserted his wife to be with the mother of his twins. The Roman Senate declared war on Mark and Cleopatra after they realised the relationship when Mark put Cleopatra's name and face on the silver Denarii. Because of the relationship with Cleopatra his relationship with the Roman Allegiance was severed and Octavian declared war on them both. They were defeated in the battle of Actium in 31BC and were followed back to Egypt by Octavian. It is at this time that Mark Antony fell on his sword with the intent to end his life after hearing that Cleopatra was dead. Mark Antony survived for a time before succumbing to his injuries and found out that Cleopatra had started the rumour to try and stop the war. MArk Antony asked her to seek peace with Octavian but negotiations failed and she killed herself as she could not bear the humiliation of not ruling. Ordering an Asp ( a poisonous snake ) she let it bite her and she died. She was the age of 39 years. Mark and Cleopatra recieved there wish of being buried by next to each other.

Overall, the death of Cleopatra saw the closure of a whole era of Egyptian history as she was the last pharoah of Egypt. Her death started the rise of the Roman Empire and gave way to Roman emperors before it became a Roman provinance. Cleopatra was seen as politically savvy and quick-witted and spoke in nine languages. Cleopatra is remembered as being bewitching and successful as well as seductive in her 'Venus the goddess of Love's' outfit in 'Cleopatra' portryed by elizabeth taylor. Cleopatra finally obtained her life long wish the day she died - she became 'unforgettable'.
